On my 02, with a good tail wind or downhill, will peg the speedometer at 85 mph. On the flats with no wind, 73 to 75 mph is normal...don't know about the older Rebels.

The other day, I met a retired highway patrolman that was a biker. He told me that a few years ago he caught an under age un-licensed driver going downhill on a 250 Rebel at 97 mph on the radar.

Sound right on to me, for the Classics as well. I've owned both and saw no difference.

It's real dependent on variables. Wind, grade, etc.

I've seen a top speed of 55mph before (WOT, 5th on a good uphill and about a 25-30mph wind). I've raced my buddy on his 01' Rebel (just like mine) on level grade with no wind, and we both kept on slowly creeping up past 80mph, right to where the speedo ends.

On downhill now, yeah - you can go "back in time!"... or over 88.8 miles an hour... :)

I barely get it 55mph...sometimes 60 on a good day.

I've had it well beyond that on at least two occasions, once with a very stiff wind at my back and the other on a mean down-hill stretch. On that mean down-hill, the needle was covering the white tenths digit of the odometer

Well, ya know... if plastic surgery to be shaped like a torpedo is what's required to retain my school-girl figure... then so be it...

I'm a tad over 200 pounds and have had our 96 Reb up to 75mph sustained on the freeway.

Howdy, just thought I'd "weigh in" lol, ok not all that funny...

I am 5'8", weigh a not-so-light 260 to 270 lbs, and I've have been up to about 75, and just above, although, I admit I was not in a headwind, and I was riding WOT. Mine's a 1999 Rebel 250, stock.

 You know, it's amazing and scary, the extremes some people will go to! First Hollywood, and models, now bikers!

Thanks for answering Dj's page, MR, it's got to be tiring to be called upon so much! I knew I'd see that pic somewhere in this thread! Some day I've GOT to figure out how to put a pic in a post. I really do.

Don't forget to take in to account the Rebel speedometer tends to be VERY optimistic. Folks checking the accuracy can often find it reads 10% high.
For 10% example: showing 80 mph would be 72 mph actual.

At my local airport there is a roadside radar speed sign - my Rebel's 55 MPH was actually 50 MPH - just about 10% off. And most folks find it is a percentage of speed error, not just subtracting off a set figure. Faster speeds tend to show bigger MPH difference.

Found out while testing, if there was another vehicle anywhere around, not even near (ahead or behind), the radar did not see the Rebel.

I have found out that some of our traffic lights don't see my Rebel, either. Sometimes I have to wait for another car to roll up to trip the light.

*grumble*

I've had my Rebel up to a little over 70 mph. It still seemed to have plenty of throttle left to go, but I really don't want to run it much harder than that. It's still new and I just don't want to wind it so much from the start. I'm confident it could comfortably maintain at least 75 if I asked it to (we are pretty flat ground, few hills). I reckon I just still have that new mom mentality where I just want to baby it. I'm hoping it will last me a very long time.

Must be all part of the Rebel's modern Stealth Technology: quite exhaust, low radar profile, low thermal image via oversized engine fin supercoolers, undetectable metal frame, and on Classic the ultra low photon emission headlight  .
