As many of you know, my customers are the biggest, strangest, most enjoyable, most infuriating, most interesting part of my job.

Today was a pretty good day. Had a brief chat with a customer who walked on a cane. I offered my empathy (I spend a good deal of my own time on one, after all), which led to trading "how I got three-legged" stories.

His is better than mine, I must say. Seems he was injured in a mountain climbing accident. Now, even though I grew up amongst mountains, I never really felt the need to scale one, and in fact had, until that moment, never really been close enough to question anyone who had. I asked some of what I am sure are the most annoyingly common questions about the hobby, and was struck with the notion that he might have fallen to get his third leg. I asked him and he said that he had not; he had always tethered securely to his anchors and his fellow climbers.

I inquired as to how tying off to each other prevented falls, to which he answered that so far as he knew, it did not.

"Then why do you guys do it?"

"It keeps the sane ones from running away. ;)"

Just thought I'd pass it along. Frankly, that's right up there with landing lights in terms of amusing stories from customers.
