Say what you want about ol' Ray-- redneck, workaholic, hard-tail, whatever-- one thing everyone could count on was that he was as conservative and old-fashioned as they come.  A Franciscan Friar would look positively flamboyant next to dry, proper Ray.  That's why it was such a shock when, at forty-five years old, he came to work with an earring in his left earlobe.

People talked, of course.  They just couldn't imagine it.  Was he finally developing a sense of style?  Did he lose a bet?  When was he going to drop the super-starched dark blue business suits and wingtip shoes?  It was causing quite a buzz, and finally the chief decided it was too distracting to the other employees to be ignored anymore.  He called Ray into his office.  As expected of prim-and-proper Ray, he marched dutifully to the CEO's office.

"Ray, you're a heck of a guy, and a credit to this company.  But this...  this earring.  It's so unlike you."

"It's just an earring, Sir.  I wish people would stop making such a big deal out of it."

"It's not the earring itself, Ray.  It's _you_ with an earring.  Is this some sort of midlife crisis?"

"No Sir.  It's just an earring.  There are probably fifteen men on my floor alone that wear one."

"We don't have a problem with the earring.  We just have a hard time picturing you wanting to wear one.  Is this something you've wanted to do for a while?"

"No Sir.  It was just a spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment kind of thing.  I just saw it, and decided to jab it in my ear and see where it lead me."

"I see.  Just how long have to been wearing this thing, Ray?"

"Ever since my wife found it in my truck."
