Who cherishes those things? I think you Brits might get a slanted view of just how much value we place on them.

Come on now Duke.. You know that there is a whole school of thought out there that figures if its not a Harley its not a real motorcycle.

You and I know better of course, but they do have a rabid following ever since the Reagan years when Harley hatched their All American Traditional Motorcycle marketing pitch. It was wildly successful in diverting attention from the obsolescence and inferiority of the product which had previously been threatening the Motor Company with bankrupcy while the Japanese were eating their lunch in the showrooms.
To be totally fair, their build quality is now as good or better than anyone else in the industry, even if their designs are doomed to stay stuck in the past due to the reluctance of the faithful to accept anything that moves on from the traditional proven design. The more modern V-Rod has been a tepid success that has limited appeal among the "big twin" crowd. :)

I'm not denying that, but the realist in me looks at market sales and market share, and there is absolutely no doubt that the more acolytic of their followers are a clear minority.

Here's what I did and I'm pretty satisfied with the sound of my bike.

At the first ridge from the end of the stock exhaust, I cut the pipe. This removes three baffles on either side.

However, when you remove baffles, you also lose back pressure. I thought about investing in torque cones, but then I figured I could make my own. I took two 1 1/12" washers with 3/8" holes and put them in between the exhaust and the engine. I got stainless steel washers because anything else will rust out really fast with the high heat.

This makes enough backpressure to keep from backfiring and losing too much power. It's cheap, easy, and as I said before it gives me a good loud sound.

It's not a HD or a large bike, but it's a nice solution if you want some good sound out of your stock pipes.

Sounds like a good idea. Do you have a video or audio of it? I'd like to hear what it sounds like.

Ok, I admit it, I like Harleys, and hope to someday own one. Not a brand new one, ans not a Sportster (way to small for me). I want a pre Twin Cam model with a carbureted EVO engine. These engines are simple, reliable if built right and not hot rodded, and they can be rebuilt over and over again without having to replace cams, heads, and crankshaft assemblies, because they were actually designed to be rebuilt. Understand, I like Harleys as bikes, and as MACHINES. I do not care for the Harley "scene" or the Harley "crowd", and would never wear any Harley branded clothes. Harleys (older ones) can be tinkered with and tuned. And yes, I admit I like the sound.

An older Moto Guzzi might also satisfy my need for a simple primitive motorcycle, but I understand parts are hard to find for them. Harley parts are everywhere. There has never been a motorcycle, or a vehicle of any kind, that even comes close to the kind of aftermarket support Harley has.

I have found that most people who don't like Harleys have either never ridden one (I have), or are turned off by the Harley "image", which I care nothing about. And the fact is, there is no longer anything "special" about riding a Harley. They are everywhere. Around here it is mostly Harleys or sport bikes. They outnumber Japanese cruisers 10 to 1. And you can now get used ones on Craigslist for reasonable prices, as their value has dropped considerably from just a few years ago.

A Rebel is a 234cc short stroke parallel twin. No matter how loud you make it, it is still going to sound like a lawn mower. That's why I kept the stock unmodified pipes. At least they are quiet, and I won't be advertising to everybody that my bike sounds like a lawn mower.

I can't speak about the 250, but the 450 sounds beautiful with the mufflers cut off. Hacksaw special pipes. I'll try and take a video sometime. I like it cause it really sounds mean under throttle, but had a nice idle sound. Still can't leave past 9 pm at night, but I still think that overall I like it.

Now if the sucker would finally agree with the carb tuning....

I put Blue Collar Bobbers exhaust on my wifes and it sounds good. Just a couple days ago we took out the baffles and put in some baffles from TC Bros. and it sounds great now. Of course it did lose some top end speed but a k&n filter, rejet, and 30 tooth rear sprocket will fix that.

My Ducati 1098S with the 70 mm full race carbon fibre exhaust sounds mean and vicious under full throttle (because it is) . I'm sorry but a 450 or 250 with sawed off pipes sounds like a loud obnoxious lawnmower. JMOOC.

If you're revving higher than maybe 7.5k, then yeah. But under idle, back roads/ slower highways speeds, it's actually nice. I wouldn't say it's the best sounding bike ever, but I'm rather happy with the sound. I'm guessing that's all that matters.

Not the best video because I'm in the carport...and alot of echo. but it's the best I can get with my itouch. lol

Fill its tank with gas and set it on fire. That should do the trick.

You get a better explosion if it's less than halfway filled. lol

Nooo. Just logic. Gasoline burns slow, but the fumes are explosive =P
