The $100 dollar ebay gas tanks are usually made in China and are a larger capacity than OE.
Many of the folks who have bought them experienced leaky seams/weld and/or badly fitted and misaligned bolt holes.
You may get luck and get a good one but its a roll of the dice, IMHO.

And that right there is exactly why I asked the question. Thanks for the input BG.... Guess I will just stick with what I have. I kinda figured that being that cheap they must not be too great.....

If I can ship to you COD or have you prepay it, I've got a very rusty stock tank (well, it is thicker walled than the Chinese tanks) that was on an abused 2001 Rebel when I bought it in 2005. I replaced it with a Tank tank for the extra capacity. The price would be the shipping cost.

Hey man, I really appreciate the offer. My tank is ok, as far as not having any dents or anything. It just looks like crap and needs a new paint job. When I saw how cheap those tanks were I got to thinking about the cost of having mine redone at a paint and body shop and knowing that isn't cheap, I figured it might just be cheaper to buy one. Judging from what BG said, I am better off just having mine repainted. Again, I really appreciate the offer. I wouldn't want to take your tank tho when someone else may be in need more than me.

I might just sand mine down myself and paint it with shaker cans and see how it turns out. I ain't all too bad at painting. Have a little experience in paint and body. So I think I might just give it a go and see how it turns out. :) I already ordered some sweet decals for it. Worse case scenario, if it doesn't look so great I am only out about $20. I can strip it back down and take it to a paint and body shop and have it done professionally.

Well, surprise surprise..... I sanded down my tank today..... started out not so bad, then it got really ugly..... the front left was bondo heaven... behind that was 8 screw holes where they had attempted to pop the tank back out. The upper ones they soldered closed, the lower ones they used jb weld on. Ugh................. Explains the peeling paint!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I thought I had a decent tank........... so I called a few salvages... got one super cheap. It looks pretty good... Put a cheesy magnet to it... all over... no bondo detectable... Inside good, only tiny rust spots (pretty typical). Outside looks like it just needs a good buffing.... We'll see where this goes....

SPECIAL NOTE: IF NO ONE HAS SEEN MY RESPONSE TO A POST IN THE WRENCH BENDING SECTION.... I AM LOOKING FOR EVEN A PIECE OF CRAP ELECTRICAL BOX COVER (THE ONE THAT GOES RIGHT BEHIND THE BATTERY BOX). I FOUND ONE IN GOOD SHAPE, BUT THEY WANT $70 FOR IT. BS!!!!!!!! SO IF ANY OF YOU HAVE A BROKEN ONE YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO PART WITH (and i will pay the shipping), PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WANT TO MAKE A FIBERGLASS ONE TO REPLACE IT, BUT I NEED A TEMPLATE TO GO BY! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was curious, what all parts are interchangeable between 1984 to 2005? It sounds as thought the gas tanks can interchange, and it looks as though some other body parts and things could also possible interchange. It would be helpful to know since I am looking for some parts for mine. If there are other model years that share the same parts, I could broaden my search when looking.... :)

Well, my hand brake was stuck, so I soaked it in pb blaster for the last couple of days. Finally got it to push in today. Wanted a real easy way to pop the piston back out without damaging it, so we attached it to a grease gun, lol. After a few minutes of working with it (pushing it in, and then using the grease gun to pop it back out) it got to where it works very smoothly again. Will have to put some brake fluid in it and make sure it is not leaking. If so, I will have to get a rebuild kit... but at least it isn't stuck anymore.....

the picture is pretty crummy... all I had was my phone with me....

I was looking at the part fische for the master cylinder. I noticed it does not show a replacement piece fr the viewing port. Mine is broken and needs replaced. I don't see the part on the parts fische tho. It also doesn't mention it in the clymer manual (yes, I finally got my manual in today!).

On page 245 of my clymer manual, figure 20, it specifically points out the viewing port. However, immediately after that (page 247) it shows the complete breakdown for the master cylinder, but it too does not mention the viewing port. I would think that it would be replaceable????? You don't have to replace the whole master cylinder body if this piece gets broken do you??????

Here is the pic of the parts fische.

Oh yeah..... now I'm feeling happy.... some of the parts for the Rebel that I have ordered are starting to arrive! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just waiting on my ignition switch to show up, and then I can start putting the front end of the bike back together. YES!

Question, has anyone used any of the seat covers they sell on ebay??? I am wondering how well they fit, look, how decent of a quality they are, etc etc.

Not for a Rebel, but my father ordered a seat cover for his NightHawk from eBay. It looks pretty good, and he said installation was pretty easy, although he had to borrow some tools. (He lives in an RV, though, and his total tool kit consists of a hammer, an adjustable wrench, and a couple of screwdrivers.)
