As dirty and nasty as it was, it needed quite a bit of initial cleaning. However, I like that jeweler's rouge idea to really spruce it up now that it's finally clean! Once I get the rest of the bike cleaned up and ready to go, I will probably do that. :D

Looking at your bike leads me to a question.... on your battery box cover it appears to be white in the opening.... I have noticed this on some others in pictures. Is that opening originally covered? What is installed there? The one on mine is just open. I didn't see any fasteners in this location, so I was wondering if it was open when first made or covered? If originally covered, what held the piece in place?

If you have time to take some close up pics, I would appreciate it. If not, that's ok.

Mine is open like yours. I have a white plastic cover on my battery to keep the leads from shorting out when I got the bike. Has since replaced the battery cables. Still have the plastic covering the battery. That's what you are seeing throught the opening. Not sure what BG has done to his.

Yes, its just an opening so you can see the water level in the battery. The original battery had the full and add levels marked on that side but the replacement batteries I've had are printed on to other side.

I installed a an SAE pigtail today so I happen to have a close up of the battery box

Ah, ok. The only pics I could find online were not large enough to be able to see what was going on there. Makes sense now. Thanks for the responses!

Ok, new question.... the plastic parts on the handlebars where the turn signals are (on the left) and the run/kill switch is (on the right)...... what can you do to polish them up and bring back some of their color? The ones on this bike are kinda faded to grey and look like crap. Ain't there some plastic restore stuff you can buy? Better question is, does it work????

Well, bummer, I had ordered the manual for the bike and got an email today saying they are out, so I had to order another from somewhere else. In the process, I ran across this seller that had 2 of them.... 1 was new and 1 was used. Check out their prices for the books:

1 new from $936.25 1 used from $842.60

What in the ^%$&*#%^$%#@$^& are people thinking???? Like ANY Clymer manual is worth that kind of money????? lol I couldn't resist... I sent them an email and asked them what they are smoking.... lol

On a positive note, I put the ole' elbow grease to work today and got the frame all compounded out. Looks great! I also polished up the exhaust pipes.... I used the blue magic cream on them, and then followed up with the jewelers rouge.... they looked great before the rouge.... they freakin sparkle after using it!!!! I actually tried the rouge by itself first. No luck. It just wasn't cuttin' the mustard. So I backed up and used the cream followed by the rouge. What a combo! I then used it on my lower crank case (since I already hit it with the blue magic).... same thing! Great suggestion there! As long as you keep your stuff clean, I imagine the rouge by itself would do the trick. But for a bike that has been sitting for a while and has quite a bit of oxidation on it (and prolly hasn't been cleaned proper since old shep was a pup), I would suggest using a metal polish followed by the rouge. :)

I got a closer look at all the rear wiring today.... the wires are unplugged and missing at the harness just in front of the rear fender. I had originally suspected mice had wreaked havoc on the wiring... but since plugs and all are missing, I guess it was just some idiot..... ugh.... so, whenever I get my manual in and know which color wire goes to what, I will put in new rear wiring....

Dark green is ground, orange is left signal, light blue is right signal, brown is the tail light/license plate light, green with with yellow trace is the brake light.

Back to Black. Its not a miracle, but I think you'll be very pleased with the results, for the price.

Brent: I know that I'm older than you.

The doc took advantage of that with his "you know, once you are in your 70's, you can't expect to heal as well as when you were young" speech.

BTW, the L'il Red Piglet is fully healed.

Thanks for the wiring schematic and for letting me know which wires go where. Most helpful! Now I can get the rear wired back up and functional. :)

I have to admit... I thought the video was a joke at first. Especially when they sprayed the tires (didn't realize till watching it a second time that it was tire shine and not black spray paint lol). I will have a look around and see if I can find that Forever Black here in my local stores.... Sounds like a cheap easy alternative to replacing.

Thanks!

Sorry, another newbie question here..... what all years are the same as the 1986 model? They typically keep the body the same for a few years before changing.... would be helpful to know since I am looking for some parts.... looks to be 1985 through 1987 going off of pics I found online.....

Thanks again....

I was lookin on ebay.... replacement gas tanks, already painted for $100..... anyone know anything about them? That's pretty cheap. Prolly cheaper than taken an old one to a paint and body shop and havin it re-done. Almost tempted to buy me a black one if they are worth a crap....

Also, I found a guy not too far from me that has an '86 parts bike. I don't know what the story is on the bike... all I know is that it doesn't run, and looks to have been taken apart somewhat and is missing some pieces. It also has no title and the guy doesn't know anything about the bike. I have no clue how he acquired it or anything. I can see some stuff I could use.... He sent me the following pic... exhaust is off, so motor is prolly trashed from sitting out. Still lots of good parts there tho. What would you guys estimate a donor bike like this to be worth??? I am figuring a bike salvage might offer him $75???

Um, yeah well, never mind. Got to talk to the guy for a little while.... He decided he wants $500 for it lol. Um, nope. Not when I can buy a running one for as low as $700. No title... motor prolly trash from being left open. What you see in the pic is what you get (so missin quite a few parts).

Dream on my friend, dream on.... :censored:

A donor bike would be great.... but it aint worth $500 to me....

I told him I can buy a pretty decent runner for $700, and got mine for $100.... And then he called me a lowballer! lol! :naughty:

Eh well.... this time next year he will still have it, and his little box of dreams....

The $100 dollar ebay gas tanks are usually made in China and are a larger capacity than OE.
Many of the folks who have bought them experienced leaky seams/weld and/or badly fitted and misaligned bolt holes.
You may get luck and get a good one but its a roll of the dice, IMHO.

If I can ship to you COD or have you prepay it, I've got a very rusty stock tank (well, it is thicker walled than the Chinese tanks) that was on an abused 2001 Rebel when I bought it in 2005. I replaced it with a Tank tank for the extra capacity. The price would be the shipping cost.
