Went out to the shed to find my old switch to compare. But that looks like the right one but don't hold me to it. Changed mine because it was cracked.

I am wondering if the mirrors have been changed out... these ones look like they might be from a different bike..... they are black plastic on the back, and the stems look to have been painted instead of chrome. Been a long time since I really paid that close of attention to a Rebel, but I was thinking that both the stems and backside of the mirrors were chrome??? Can anyone enlighten me? I looked up some images on google and everything I am seeing seems to confirm what I remember.....

I know mine are original and they are all chrome. Don't know if they offered more than 1 style mirror.

I am guessing that it is aftermarket tho???? So I have to wonder if it's any good. Some of these ebay folks sell some seriously shoddy crap....

I'm pretty sure you can find a used one some where. I was shocked that my local Honda dealer had mine in stock. When I went in to get one. It was the first and only thing. They had to order the copper ring when I installed my new exhaust. I would send you my old one but it is busted at the base.

What's a real good way to go about polishing up all of the aluminum and chrome on the bike? Yeah, I know, there's good old fashioned elbow grease.... I really hate that. I would like some sort of a power tool. :) :bikerthumb:

Also, what is the best way to go about cleaning up the wheels and spokes? They aren't rusted, just dirty and not shiny.... the idea of polishing one spoke at a time makes me quiver lol. :gaah:

I use coca cola and tinfoil on chrome that I can't just scuff up with a wire brush and shoot with stove paint.

Looks ok to me. It can't be OEM new for $20. If I were me I'd look to buying used OEM rather than new aftermarket, though, but eh, I don't really know what I am talking about. Seems like aftermarket stuff never quite fits without taking a grinder or a file or a drill to it, and rusts faster. :/

If you don't mind making a bracket from junk metal or modifying what you've got, I expect that most any 6-wire Honda ignition switch off a CDI bike could be wired to the connector off your broken one. Heck, they may all even use the same connector and pinout, I dunno....

Maybe try Jack's Rebel Warehouse or Baltimore Cycle Salvage for a used OEM one.

On the rear fender wiring, Maybe this diagram will help.

The original mirror were chrome. The second gen Rebel have a vibration isolator on them but the '85 to '87 were solidly mounted.

The aluminum engine side covers and fork sliders had a clear coat on them. In order to polish them, the clear coat has to be stripped. The easiest way I found was to use a heavy duty stripper, like aircraft paint stripper. Then a buffing wheel on a drill and some jeweler's rouge.

I might just buy the aftermarket and see if it works out. $20.... if it doesn't work, oh well.

Looks like exhaust gaskets are plentiful and cheap.... so I will go ahead and buy new ones for each side. :)

Thanks for the diagram. Very helpful. I have ordered some manuals, but it will be a few days before they get here.

I also used my heat gun and got off an old inspection sticker that was on the forks. I then proceeded to polish up the forks, handlebars, front rim, headlight, and turn signals.......

I also pulled off the foot pegs, gear shifter, chain guard, and some other items. I finished off the evening by buffing out all of the rust inside the battery box. Will prolly follow up on that by putting some black high temp paint in there to help protect it.

Next, I will prolly take some rubbing compound and buff out the frame. Should look pretty presentable after that. Also gonna take off the rear wheel and buff it all out.

After that, I will probably start at the front and start working my way to the back, replacing bolts and fixing any little problems I find, such as the ignition and rear wiring.

I remembered last night that a good friend of mine's nephew (who is also a pretty good friend) has done a lot of paint and body work. His dad owns a car painting co. So I called him and asked him if he would be willing to paint it for me. He said he would. He also said he would get out his air brush and do some custom paint on it to make it look sweet. Now, all that said, it SOUNDS great, but I ain't counting my chickens till they hatch. If he DOES follow through and do the work, then AWESOME! If not, well, it will be a bummer and I might have to go to plan B..... shaker cans. :( But, in the off chance he follows through, I guess I need to figure out how I want it painted.... :)

Man, just looking at the pics, it sure doesn't look like I accomplished much today, although I really did (and my back says I did too much! lol). One thing about it tho.... the motor is clean enough to eat off of now!!!!

I went by autozone and picked up some blue magic metal polish cream. I also bought a little cone shaped buffer that you can put in your drill. It made pretty easy work out of the wide open areas. For the smaller areas that it couldn't reach, I used a toothbrush and the metal polish. Cleaned it right up! Also got rid of all of the little spots of surface rust it had on the forks and stuff. The pictures really don't do it justice. It looks great. It is looking less and less like a donor bike! :bikerthumb:

Cool. I've got one of those mothers polishing balls that came with the headlight kit. Never crossed my mind. Kinda forgot about it. I now have another use for it. LOL

There ya go!

The buffer cone I bought was made by mothers too......

I am gonna try using it with the rubbing compound to clean up the frame.... I'll post pics showing how that works out. :)

Looking good! Yours looks more like OE and quite clean.
I used a buffing wheel from Ace hardware and a tube of jewelers rouge so mine is over polished and the Honda embossing is filled in.
