Hi,

First of all, let me say WELCOME TO OUR FORUM! :D

Second, you're probably reading this because you want to post a photo or a link, but you're a new user and you're getting a strange message that says that's not allowed.

Yes... that's right. We have restricted rights in place for new users due to the overwhelming amount of (undesirable XXX/drug/stock/etc) SPAM that gets posted to forums such as this.

It's not because we think YOU are a spammer, but because the most effective way to stop them dead in their tracks is to keep them from doing what they want.

You must be a member here for a certain amount of time AND have made a certain amount of posts before the link/pic posting restriction is AUTOMATICALLY lifted from your account. We won't disclose what amount of time or how many posts you must have, but most legitimate users manage to meet the minimum requirements within the first month or less of membership.

I know, it's annoying... if you want to post a picture of your bike for all to see, click ong the "Garage" tab at the top of every page- that will let you add your bike(s) to the Garage, including photos. When you do this, it puts links to the left of each of your posts with your bike(s) (up to the first 4 I think) and users can click those links to see your bike(s).

It's a lot better than having XXX nude spam popping up on our reader's screens, right in front of their children. I'm sure you can understand.

Afraid we can't let that cat out of the bag.

If we did, well--

we'd be right back where we were with the spammers...

Go here

http://rebel250.com/rebelforum/gara ... CID=%20300

Click "edit vehicle" and upload a picture.

There is no restriction on the garage, and anyone on the site can click the link next to your name to see your pics.

One of the other bike forums I belong to the post count must be 100 in order to see the "VIP" section...
Probably not as high here but it's definitely a good idea to keep out the crap...

Not much longer, Strider; really.

Sorry we can't actually "say," but as above...

Strider,

Shouldn't need to wait at all... you've met all the requirements.

I understand why this restriction, but it's a bit heavy handed IMO. I only post occasionally and only in the wrenching section, but when I'm trying to help someone out I can't post any links or pictures to explain what I'm talking about. Meaning I'm not very helpful and shouldn't bother to post at all. It's a catch 22.

You haven't long to go. Post a little more frequently, and you won't have an issue.

We may reduce the requirements at some point, and after the new software is available to us, the requirement will likely vanish altogether.

Regardless of my personal post count, my point is that you may be alienating new members who may be trying to help, but see that it's pointless to try so they go elsewhere. I dig that you have a problem with spammers, but there are other measures you can take.

Just friendly constructive criticism.

And our point was that spending upwards of six hours a day clearing garbage of the board was offending our staff, and the dozens of scams, nude pictures, drug links, etc, posted every hour were offending the over three thousand members we already have. Yes, there are other things we can do. We know; we've spent ten years trying everything leading up to this.

This works; nothing else has, save on a very short-term basis. And yes, we could go back to spending six hours a day policing the place, but that leaves little time for the lives we actually lead.

As DJ pointed out, the new software gives us more options, and we may try something else if we can find something we haven't tried yet. But I don't think any of us is wants to go back to giving up our lives to keep junk off this site.

Anyone who registers can post. Even from the very first post, a person who wants to help can offer an opinion, give advice, ask a question, etc. He can refer to something even if he can't link to it, and so far, every human being we've encountered, even the young kids, has been clever enough to post something like

I can't make a link yet, but there's a neat picture at
bikebandit
dot
com
#235459038769

And get his point across.

As it is, yes, it's a pain for those of you who don't post that much. We appologized for that when we implemented it, and I'll do it again now. I am sorry it's a nuisance for you. If it helps, it's a one-time deal. It doesn't reset. Once you're in, you're in. I am sorry, but not sorry enough to go back to robbing myself of five, six, and more hours of my family every day.

I just had a plain text message rejected. No urls no images just text.

My big problem with it is that I'm not told this up front and I have no clue what I have to do or how long I have to wait. So I spend a good amount of time putting together a post to have it blow up in my face. It doesn't make me feel welcome or warm and fuzzy.

Being an admin on a few internet forums and a bbs sysop I understand your problem. Obviously there is something that works. Or others would be getting hosed with spam as well.

That happens to me too every once in a while, and I've been here for years, even on the old forum. Just some kind of a glitch with the internet I guess.
