Yes.
It is always a good idea.

If there is no crap in your tank and fuel, then no harm no foul.

But if there is, a $2 fuel filter will catch it. Beats the living crap out of cleaning the carbs when the crap gets caught in there
. TRUST ME.

I have my own theory as to why they don't come with a fuel filter from the factory.

A fuel filter is always a good idea. It may not solve your issue but it will prevent junk from the tank making it to the carb.
A lot of folks have their favorite filter I use the Briggs and Stratton button filter.

I went from the button type with stainless steel mesh to the cone type with sintered brass element, after my idle jet clogged. But now the cone type is bending at the carb side nipple, and it is not even 1 month old. Anything better out there?

They're massive, but you can go with the glass-and-metal jobbies.

I have ordered 2 90 degree fuel filters, I will post pics when they arrive although its not a mystery what they will look like. I haven't seen them mentioned but I also haven't read all 5 pages of this.

Did it deform something like this?

I attributed this to the 10% alcohol present in local gasoline, but I won't claim I have anything behind that opinion. It was soft enough to kink at the points where it was bending. I'm quite fond of the small 90 degree style. They are cheap enough to buy by the dozen, so changing them more often than a larger filter is not an issue.
