Just bought an 86 rebel 250, it's my first street bike so I'm pretty excited about that. What are some common things that go wrong with these?

make sure you don't overfill the engine oil. the 250 has been known to blow out the left side crankshaft seal resulting in sudden loss of engine oil

And on the 80's series bikes, there were scattered incidents of starter clutches failing prematurely (scattered; not rare, but not especially common, either), particularly when the engine has run for a long time, and for some reason, starter relay failure. Again, scattered. If your bike suffers from that problem, relocating the relay seems to solve the problem, as does replacing it with a heavier unit.

But over all, the 80s series bikes really didn't have any "typical problems." It wasn't until the nineties bikes that recurring problems would pop up.
