OBJECTIVE - a one-time, face-to-face meeting of Rebelers,
at some point during this 3-day weekend.

Everyone will be responsible for his own hotel, food, entertainment .. and
transportation to & from Vegas.

PLANE TRANSPORTATION is the popular choice. Apparently, many frequent
flyer miles are in the hands of Rebelers, which is a good thing, because of the
distance .. and the need for returning home for work by Tuesday.

MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORTATION. Decided to drop "Non-Riding Meet" from the
subject line. Two who live within driving distance are choosing this route.
Another two have the option of biking it or otherwise.

HOTEL. Doesn't matter where you choose to stay. Some may already have
free room comps .. or reduced rates at a particular hotel .. or able to find a
flight package deal which includes a hotel.

ENTERTAINMENT.

This one is proving to be interesting. Las Vegas - a gambling mecca; food and
buffets galore for those of us who love to eat; entertainment of every variety;
people-watching, etc.

Most popular statement?

"I'm going to Hoover Dam"

Another?

"I want to see the Grand Canyon" .. (4 1/2 hours away)

THE MEET - Place & Time to be decided later.

When 3 couples initiated this weekend meet, it was easy to say that we could
meet at a restaurant or at the fountain at ???. And since I hate to wake up
early and another would like to catch an evening show .. maybe mid afternoon.

Much more thought will need to be given to Place & Time than I originally
thought.

As of yesterday, 22 bodies from North, South, East, & West .. are seriously
intending to be in Vegas. They are actively checking out flight deals and
hotel rates

And, as of yesterday, I had YET to post this meet info here.

Let's see .. late morning & afternoon are perfect for sight-seeing. Shows are
generally in the evening or at night. Why do I have the awful feeling that I may
have to wake up early if I want to meet with other Rebelers? Again.
Since it's a one-time meet, I guess I could sacrifice. Of course, Phil C. said,
"well .. maybe we can meet 2 times". He's no help.

Prime Rib .. yes! I remember reading that someone offered to take you to
a restaurant .. off strip & downtown .. for the best ribs in Vegas. The name
of the place began with "Memphis". Could "Ribs" have been the 2nd part?

I'll be seeking a specialty restaurant too. Supposedly, one exists, also off
strip & downtown .. that serves real Hawaiian food. Not merely food that has
pineapple thrown in, then called Hawaiian.

That I know of, reservations have been made at or will be made soon at
Harrah's, MGM, Four Queens, & The Golden Nugget.

I wonder if we'd have enough people to have a Rebeler in every major hotel
in Vegas? I don't really believe this .. I'm just procrastinating because I need
to do some bill-paying this morning .. and Vegas thoughts top bill-paying ones
every time.

Floyd and I are still undecided... Would love to go, will see how it all ends up after the holidays... Or should I say after the bills are paid!

I walked in on RW looking at a website for helicopter flights out of Vegas. Not
unexpected, since we'd talked to 3 separate people on the phone yesterday,
whose conversations centered on the Vegas trip. Wanting to see the Grand Canyon
has been a popular subject and yesterday was the 1st time someone mentioned
a helicopter ride versus a trip by rented vehicle.

Something caught my attention immediately while looking over his shoulder and
I said, rather enthusiastically ..

"Oh, look .. the 1st one offers a flying lesson too" !!!

RW stilled. His body froze, his hands stopped moving. His head alone did a 90 degree
turn .. a bit reminiscent of the head turning scene in EXORCIST .. looked me directly
in the eyes, and said ... No.

I was surprised. Caught off guard. RW has always been, not only supportive,
but encouraging when it comes to new experiences for me. Especially when its
something he's done before & enjoyed, and I hadn't.

Memories from a few years ago immediately flickered through my mind. The pilot
next to me grabbing hold of the controls. His smile gone. RW leaning forward
from the back seat of a 4-passenger plane .. staring front, forehead suddenly
beaded with perspiration.

I used to have a tendency to immediately slow down or brake when I felt that I
was going too fast for conditions. Since taking up motorcycling, "throttle can
be your friend .. braking can kill you" is more my mantra. And I've used it
several times in tight situations. But, not at the time of my plane-flying lesson.
During my pre-Rebel years.

When the ground is rushing towards you as you're setting up for a landing is
NOT the time to apply brakes. The plane nearly went into a stall. Unlike the two
experienced men in the plane with me, I was too inexperienced at the time to
realize that I had placed all of us in a very, very dangerous position. I could
have killed us.

As I re-read what I'd so far written, I still feel badly about that experience.
"How stupid!" runs through my mind. And I full understand RW's ... No.

Up until I glanced up from my scratchings when RW says..
"Here's a new experience for us" .. and find myself staring at the monitor, rather
numbly .. sort of unbelieving.

My guilt disappeared. Determination set in.

If this guy is willing to sacrifice my body to balancing from the sidecar in
sidecar racing .. he can bet that if I ever have the chance for a helicopter flying
lesson .. his life & bippy will be on the line because

he WILL be with me in the helicopter !!!

Looks like Rebelers may be in Vegas spanning President's Day.

So far, travel arrangements & hotel reservations are for

- arriving Thur, Feb 17 .. leaving Mon, Feb 21

- arriving Sun, Feb 20 .. leaving Wed, Feb 23

These are the ones I know about.

Of course, drop-ins might be possible. Those not intending to spend the
night. Or others choosing to stay just one or two nights.

Add Mandalay Bay to the hotel list. Phil was to stay at The Golden Nugget but
Mandalay Bay comped him 3 free nites and he couldn't resist.

He now thinks we should designate a daily meeting place .. something like
Vegas class reunions do. A different location every day. Not a "have-to-be-there"
place .. just somewhere for those in town at the time to meet, if they choose.

Example: One day .. maybe lunch at the medium priced House of Blues, followed
by walk-throughs at City Center, Aria, New York New York, a boat ride in the
Venetian .. (had to stop him .. he was getting carried away)

Pat selected the Sunday, Feb 20, meeting place.

She, Logan, Delbert & Marie will be flying in (together) on Sunday. She suggested
we meet at the Fremont Street Experience

Here's a useful link.

http://www.visitlasvegas.com/vegas/play ... /index.jsp

There are many Las Vegas websites to view. RW & I favor this one.

It might prove entertaining for those who have no intention of being in Vegas
in February as well as informative for those who will.

Sorry to say, we will not make it to this one. A number of things have gotten in our way. Hail damage has forced us to replace our roof and windows. I just had an appointment scheduled for the 21st that I MUST be sure to make. Seems money and time are not on our side right now. I wish you all a GREAT time!

What an awful coincidence! RW & I walked into the house in Pennsylvania .. the weekend before Thanksgiving .. and inside the front door, found a quarter of the room ceiling on the floor and wet, black insulation hanging from the huge hole in the ceiling. The house has a new roof now .. some new flooring, new insulation .. and we are considerably poorer.

Sounds like LIFE is happening to us too, doesn't it?

Nice to have friends at a time like this. Phil from Ohio stopped by after the roof was done and assured us that everything looked good. We'll need one more trip to PA before putting the house up for rent .. but the weather has not cooperated. We'll try to sneak in between snow falls. VA and W. VA has us the most concerned. Weren't cars trapped on 19, between 77 and 79, for 2 or 3 days last winter?

We don't really want to rent the house out but are also not in the financial position to maintain 2 separate houses. It's going to be painful to hand the house over to someone else who'll be sitting on the enclosed front porch and watching deer nibbling on the lower branches, a coyote sneaking pass, a woodchuck basking in the sunshine while he himself nibbles on a flower, and chipmunks chasing each other across the ground & up the trees. The house & setting would have been perfect for a Rebel rally too.

I'm depressing myself and the house isn't even rented out yet. Maybe the thought that the house HAS TO be rented out is what's really depressing me. Back to Vegas.

Sorry that we won't see you in Vegas, purpleazfrog. As far as we know, RW & I are the only Easterners traveling by vehicle instead of plane. RW has mentioned a couple of past trips out West where we had to drop down to I-20 & I-10 instead of I-40 to avoid bad weather. If this should happen again .. meet you & Leatherneck at the closest Waffle House?

hmmm .. wonder how much trouble we would have if we tried to drag jsonder into a Waffle House? I don't believe that he has an appreciation for grits.

Only for good grits. Brenda only makes "fair" grits.

I haven't had good grits since leaving Alabama with my year-old bride back in 1969.

{if parsing the 3rd sentence makes you think I was poaching you'd be wrong, she was 21 when we got married}

Brenda's aunt could make good grits.

If ya get close enough where we can make it happen, you bet ya! It was dissapointing to have to say we couldn't make it. It was the closest we've come to meeting up with some others, not to mention our favorite Rebelers! We just may have to plan another ride in AZ. I still wonder what happened to our no show (I think his name started with an E?) Any who how, You haven't seen the last of us!

I suspect that I could break loose for a waffle. (Waffle House in Picacho if the road is functional?)

Ideally this would be on your way to LV and Bob could join up.

PS Picacho is ~half way between Tucson and Phoenix just off I-10.

Functional? Now what does that really mean? Sounds like a pot hole dirt disaster...

Repaving/widening of I-10 was down at the Picacho Peak exit and I'm guessing that the widening is moving north toward Phoenix.

It made on/off a bit nasty at the Peak.

No. No. No. RebelRed has been an angel for me for the past 12 years. If she learns that I met up with BOB secretly after leaving her behind? Oh, my .. I don't even want to speculate as to what she could do to me !!!

I have a PM sent to a name on the "wanting-to-host" list. Sent it yesterday. Also sent an email this morning to an email addy that I came across. If I don't hear back from this person in a couple of days .. and no one from out West pops in with a request .. I'll seek another name from the list. Towards the West.

I'm looking to keeping BOB moving West towards those who have been waiting for a long time.
When I come up with a name & address .. I'll forward the info to you for shipping him out.
