Forums in general are experiencing a decline in activity. In this day and age of instant gratification, they can't compare with facebook etc where you post something and in less than a minute someone is clicking a like button, or, against all odds, actually COMMENTING. Communication has been dumbed down by the like button, it's become a lazy way to say "I agree with everything you said but am too lazy to actually contribute to the conversation".

That's kind of an interesting observation, re decline in forum participation. Sounds very plausible to me. I'm on a couple of fly fishing forums, and their traffic has held consistent for some time now, but we're mostly old guys (say, 40 and up for the most part), and so don't twitter/tweet/whatever. So, yeah, I can definitely see what you're getting at.

Even the other board has gone from active to semi-active.

Simple fact is you can find any topic you're looking for on facebook and receive the instant gratification anytime you post something to that page. And then post it again on your own page. Granted the group FB pages tend to have more actual conversation going on, but the social media is the choice for this generation.

Even when the forums were highly active, response time was still measured in minutes. Instant gratification needs a resource that responds in seconds...even though the forums often offer email notification to response in threads more people are on facebook than a forum, and even if they're not into a particular topic they're still likely to hit a like button on anything you say. And that's all it takes to satisfy instant gratification: a like.
