The Rebel (and all bikes) are specifically designed for one size tire. The bike will handle and ride best on the correct size tire for the rim. If a manufacturer was going to use a wider tire for any reason, they would also fit a wider rim so the tire would assume the correct shape in profile. Squeezing an oversize tire on a too narrow rim results in a distorted tire profile and sketchy handling. Of course if all you care about is how it looks then don't worry about it.

140 if you plan on retaining the rear fender. Anything larger than stock simply balloons out in diameter instead of width and ends up akin to "Mack truck tire on a Civic" in appearance instead of the fat look you may be after.

What possible improvement might come from changing the tire size from the specs the bike was designed for?
I'M certainly not interested in doing so, just curious as to what the motivation for a Rebel owner might be.

But the Rebel doesn't really benefit from a larger contact patch. The stock rubber provides all the grip you'll be needing to get the 16.5 HP to the road. Liter class sport bikes generally run 190 width rear tires as opposed to the 180's you find on the supersport class with less horsepower. The baddest performance bikes fit 190's to get 200 odd HP to the ground.

Going wider is counterproductive because the bike resists turning more than any improvement in traction could justify. I rode a V Rod fitted with a 240 series rear once and it handled terribly. You could feel the front tire scrubbing off as it tried to hold the bike into a lean.

Looks. It's always for looks.

Fact is that the wider you go, the worse (more sluggish) the handling, and the increased weight (with no corresponding increase in contact patch) means that acceleration is slowed as is braking (though honesty, you have to start running jack shafts and butchered up swing arms before you actually _feel_ the loss of braking). The increase in unsparing weight also adversely affects ride comfort.

The only "positive" to a wider tire that it looks wider. If that turns you on, then there's the benefit.
